In March 2010 IMO's Marine Environment Protection Commitee prepared a draft text on mandatory requirements for an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI)
The EEDI is being developed to stimulate innovation in and technical progress of all the elements that influence the energy efficiency of a ship, including fresh water generation.
Very many sea water Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems have been manufactured, installed and commissioned, based on DETECON's design, such as a 600 cubic metre per 24 hrs sea water RO desalination plant on Pullmantur's HORIZON, EMPRESS, OCEAN DREAM, ZENITH, and onboard of passenger ships sailing under the flag of the AIDA group of companies, NCL, RCCL, and others.
All the RO systems included an Energy Recovery Unit (ERU) that reduces the energy consumption from around 10,5 to 3,0 kWh per cubic metre of fresh water produced, simultaniously improving the CO2-balance of the ship
We, here at DETECON, believe more cruise ship operators should consider retrofitting RO plants on existing ships, including energy recovery devices. The companay's Senior Vice President Wenzel E. Janda says, "this would reduce fuel oil consumption and CO2 footprint on envirionment, and should be included in vessel SEEMP, Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan".
